Some people think that the concept of "coming out of the closet" applies only to gay or lesbian people. NOT TRUE. In many ways it's just as important for the nongay population to be comfortable with the subject of homosexuality as it is for gay people. After all, statistics show that the majority of people are heterosexual, and so it stands to reason that many of the nongay teachers are the ones who are going to be dispensing ideas and attitudes to students. Here are some tips:

1. Take the Self-Evaluation on nonbiased behavior that is on this Web site.
2. Be appropriate in the way that you discuss homosexuality with your students. Check the tips for LGBT teachers. Most of the same advice applies to nongay teachers.
3. The two biggest issues that nongay teachers have is
   • If I talk about gay things, will people think I'm gay?
   • If I talk about gay subjects in a way that is neutral or positive, will people think I am trying to "promote" homosexuality?

GET PAST THESE TWO ROADBLOCKS AND YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY TO FREEDOM–AND MANY YOUNG LIVES ARE GOING TO BE SAVED IN THE PROCESS.
